Biography

Walter Lee James, Jr.
Walter Lee James, Jr.

"A Man Putting Action Behind the Vision of Our Community"
"Working to eliminate the Dis-Ease in our Community"

Walter Lee James, Jr. is a motivated resident of the Bladensburg community.  He is a native of the Eastern Shore, Virginia, where he received his childhood education and his strong sense of community. Walter is the son of Mr. Walter Lee James, Sr. and Mrs. Lillian Virginia James. Walter became very involved with his Eastern Shore community at an early age. At the age of 12, Walter joined the Eastern Shore Rural Health Organization, which provides free medical attention for the residents of the entire Delmarva Peninsula through an Annual Health Fair. Because of Walter's continued dedication to the Eastern Shore Health Fair, he was recognized by the organization with an award in honor of his hard work and commitment: The Walter James Spirit of Volunteerism Award.  This Award is presented on annual basis to a student on the Eastern Shore that exemplifies excellence in their work with the Annual Health Fair. Walter returns to the Eastern Shore each year to volunteer his time to a community which has given him so much. His goal is to inspire other young people to carry a torch for their community.

After leaving home Walter attended Columbia Union College located in Takoma Park, MD, where he continued his community service.  He spent one year at the college double majoring in Pre Law and English.  While at CUC, Walter became President of the Pre law Club.  Still with his attitude of helping others and making a difference, he joined the Loaves and Fishes Organization. The Loaves and Fishes Organization goes into the community and feeds those families who are unable to sustain steady nutritional meals on a daily basis. This further inspired Walter to become more involved and committed, realizing that strong families create strong communities.

With the opportunity arising for Walter to grow and broaden his horizons, he transferred to Howard University in Washington, DC, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Degree in International Business with a concentration in marketing. While at Howard, Walter continued in his ways of making a positive difference in the lives of others by becoming a part of the Howard University Dorm Council, where he served as the Council's Vice President. In this capacity, Walter was responsible for improving the living conditions of dormitory life for all students.  Also, as part of the Dorm Council Judiciary Committee, he fought for the rights of those accused, insuring that fairness was carried out across the board.

After graduating from Howard University and looking toward the future, Walter purchased a home in Bladensburg, where he and his lovely wife Takisha James and daughter Imani James reside. With an oneness of mind in improving our community, they stand together in Making a Difference.  Walter currently serves as on the Bladensburg's Town Council and also as the President of the Port Towns Community Development Corporation. As a Council Member Walter has been a strong advocate for youth and senior citizen involvement.  He believes that our youth are not simply our future, but that they can make a difference today; and that our seniors provide great wisdom as we try to make our community more livable.

Walter has a vision for our community that stimulates growth through home ownership and job creation, which in return, creates a sense of appreciation and a character of responsibility. Walter believes that in order for any community to prosper; the people of that community must be equipped and empowered to make a positive difference, socially and economically; in a safe environment.  Walter is what many would call a Servant Leader.  He is a man who believes that you lead by serving, you motivate positive change through positive example and that you love your neighbor as yourself.
